Standard 38 mm molded FRP grating with 38 × 38 mm mesh weighs 19.50 kg/m², so a 1220 × 3660 mm panel weighs about 87 kg. Weights across the MACHS range run from 5.77 kg/m² for 13 mm grating to 50.43 kg/m² for 60 mm heavy-duty grating. This page lists every size, shows how to work out panel and cover-plate weights, and explains why weight is also a quality check.
Key Takeaways
- Common molded weights: 12.30 kg/m² (25 mm), 14.60 kg/m² (30 mm), 19.50 kg/m² (38 mm), 23.51 kg/m² (50 mm).
- Panel weight = panel area × unit weight. A 1220 × 4000 mm panel of 38 mm grating weighs about 95 kg.
- Solid FRP plate weighs thickness (mm) × 1.85 kg/m². Add 2.00 kg/m² for a grit surface.
- A noticeably lighter grating at the same size can mean less glass and resin in the panel.

| 50 mm, 50 × 50 mm, phenolic | 71% | 21.16 kg/m² |
Weights are catalogue unit weights for bare grating. Phenolic weights are listed separately because the resin changes the weight.
How much does pultruded grating weigh?
MACHS I4015 pultruded grating (38 mm, 40% open area) weighs 23.5 kg/m², about 20% more than 38 mm molded grating. The extra weight comes with much higher stiffness: it deflected 0.76 mm at a 914 mm span under 4.8 kN/m², against 3.45 mm for 38 mm molded grating. Weights for other pultruded models are given on request. See molded vs pultruded FRP grating.
How heavy is a full panel?
Multiply the panel area by the unit weight. For common sizes:
| Grating | 1220 × 4000 mm (4.88 m²) | 1220 × 3660 mm (4.47 m²) | 915 × 3050 mm (2.79 m²) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 mm, 38 × 38 | 60.0 kg | 54.9 kg | 34.3 kg |
| 30 mm, 38 × 38 | 71.2 kg | 65.2 kg | 40.7 kg |
| 38 mm, 38 × 38 | 95.2 kg | 87.1 kg | 54.4 kg |
| 50 mm, 50 × 50 | 114.7 kg | 105.0 kg | 65.6 kg |
| 60 mm heavy duty | 246.1 kg | 225.2 kg | 140.7 kg |
Full panels are heavy enough to need a handling plan. Your site’s manual handling rules apply. Cut pieces are lighter and are usually placed by hand.
How do you calculate the weight of covered grating?
Add the cover plate weight to the bare grating weight. For solid FRP plate:
- Smooth plate: thickness (mm) × 1.85 kg/m²
- Grit plate: thickness (mm) × 1.85 + 2.00 kg/m²
The plate formula applies to solid plate only. It is not a way to estimate bare grating weights.
Why is unit weight a useful quality check?
Glass fibre and resin are the main cost of a grating panel, so cutting weight is one way to cut price. If a quote for 38 mm, 38 × 38 mm grating is much lighter than 19.50 kg/m², ask the supplier to explain it and to give the glass content. A burn-off test to ASTM D2584 measures the resin content of a sample, and the remainder is glass. Our QC checklist for importers covers the other checks.
How does weight affect freight and structure?
- Freight: multiply the total area by the unit weight, then add pallets and crates. Ask for the container loading quantity of your thickness. See our landed cost guide.
- Dead load on the structure: include the grating weight in the support design. 38 mm grating adds 0.19 kN/m² (19.50 kg/m² × 9.81 m/s²).
- Handling: lighter panels reduce lifting equipment on site, which helps on rooftops and remote platforms. See our rooftop solar walkway guide.
Send your layout and we calculate the weight of every cut piece, pallet and container before shipment.

How much does 1 m² of FRP grating weigh?
It depends on thickness and mesh. Our 25 mm molded grating weighs 12.30 kg/m², 38 mm weighs 19.50 kg/m² and 50 mm weighs 23.51 kg/m².
Why does mini mesh weigh more than standard mesh?
Smaller openings need more bars in the same area. Our 38 mm mini mesh (19 × 19 mm) weighs 23.51 kg/m², against 19.50 kg/m² for 38 mm with 38 × 38 mm mesh.
Is lighter FRP grating better?
Not by itself. Lighter grating is easier to handle, but at the same size and mesh it may contain less material. Check the load table and the glass content together with the weight.
