Short Answer

An FRP solar walkway is a line of light, non-conductive grating panels laid beside or between PV rows. It lets O&M crews walk the roof without stepping on modules or damaging the roof sheets. The usual spec is 38×38 mm mesh molded grating, 25–38 mm thick and 30–100 cm wide, clamped to the roof seams or mounting rails so the roof is not drilled.

Key Takeaways

  • Walkways protect three things: the technicians, the modules and the roof sheets.
  • FRP is non-conductive and corrosion-free, and it weighs little on light metal roofs.
  • Choose thickness by the support spacing, not by habit. A wider gap needs a thicker panel.
  • Fix walkways with clamps to seams or rails, and seal any cut edge.
  • Walkways do not replace fall protection near roof edges.

Why do rooftop solar plants need walkways?

Crews need safe, repeatable access for cleaning, inspection and repairs. Without a walkway, they walk on roof sheets or near modules and cause damage. The NREL best practices guide for PV O&M treats safe access and planned maintenance as core parts of system performance.

  • Protect modules: stepping on panels can crack cells.
  • Protect the roof: repeated foot traffic dents metal sheets and can break seals.
  • Protect people: a defined route with a slip-resistant surface.
  • Save time: crews move faster on a clear path.

Why use FRP instead of steel or aluminum?

FRP walkways do not rust or conduct electricity, and they add little weight to the roof.

What size and thickness should the walkway be?

Choose the width by how the crew works, and the thickness by the distance between supports.

  • Width: 30–50 cm for inspection routes. 60–100 cm where crews carry tools or cleaning equipment.
  • Thickness: 25 mm for short support spacing. 30–38 mm for wider spacing or heavier use.
  • Mesh: 38×38 mm is standard. Use a smaller mesh if tools or small parts could fall through.
  • Surface: grit top gives the best grip on dusty or wet roofs.
  • Color: yellow marks the route clearly. Gray blends in.

Always check deflection at your support spacing. Our FRP grating RFQ checklist explains how to state span and load.

How is an FRP walkway fixed without drilling the roof?

Most rooftop walkways are clamped, not drilled.

  • Standing-seam roofs: seam clamps hold a support rail, and the grating is clipped to the rail.
  • Trapezoidal metal roofs: brackets fix to the rib, often on the same system as the PV mounting.
  • Concrete flat roofs: ballasted supports or pedestals. Check the roof’s load capacity first.
  • Grating to support: stainless steel hold-down clips. See grating clip types.

After cutting panels to length, seal the cut edges with resin. See how to cut fiberglass grating.

What safety rules still apply?

A walkway provides access. It does not provide fall protection. Near roof edges and skylights, crews still need guardrails, covers or personal fall arrest. In the U.S., follow OSHA 1910.28 on fall protection.

  • Route walkways away from edges and fragile roof lights where possible.
  • Add FRP handrails where a walkway runs near an edge. See FRP handrail standards.
  • Inspect clips and panels during regular PV maintenance.

FAQ

Will FRP walkways fade in the sun?

UV-stabilized resin and surface veils slow fading. Surface change over the years is normal and does not mean loss of strength.

Can walkways be added to an existing PV roof?

Yes. Clamp-on systems are designed for retrofit and do not require drilling the roof sheets.

Do walkways shade the modules?

Not when they sit between rows at or below module height.
