Short Answer

The landed cost of FRP grating is the factory price plus packing, inland transport, ocean freight, insurance, import duties and taxes, customs clearance and delivery to your warehouse. For most importers, freight and duties make up a large share of that total, so compare suppliers on landed cost per square meter, not on ex-works price.

Key Takeaways

  • Quote everything per square meter of usable grating, then add costs per container.
  • FRP grating is light but bulky. Container volume, not weight, usually sets how much you can ship.
  • Duties depend on the exact HS/HTS code and the country of origin. Confirm the code with a customs broker before you order.
  • Agree the Incoterm first. It decides which costs are in the supplier’s price.

What goes into the landed cost of FRP grating?

Landed cost has seven parts. Add them all before comparing suppliers.

Cost itemWho usually pays (FOB)Notes
Ex-works product priceSupplierPer m² or per panel
PackingSupplierPallets, corner guards, film
Inland transport to port and export clearanceSupplierIncluded in FOB price
Ocean freight and insuranceBuyerPer container
Import duties and taxesBuyerBased on HS/HTS code and origin
Customs clearance and port feesBuyerBroker and terminal charges
Delivery to warehouseBuyerTrucking from port

Who pays each item depends on the Incoterm. The ICC Incoterms rules define exactly where cost and risk transfer.

How do you calculate landed cost per square meter?

Divide the total cost of one container by the square meters it holds.

  1. Get the ex-works or FOB price per m².
  2. Ask the supplier for a loading plan: how many m² fit in a 20 ft or 40 ft HQ container.
  3. Add all per-container costs: freight, insurance, clearance, port fees and trucking.
  4. Add duties and taxes, calculated on the declared customs value.
  5. Landed cost per m² = (product cost + all shipping costs + duties) ÷ m² in the container.

Why does container loading matter so much?

FRP grating weighs much less than steel grating of similar size, so a container usually fills up by volume long before it reaches its weight limit. Better loading means lower freight per square meter.

  • Mix heights in one container: thin panels can fill space around thick ones.
  • Ship standard panel sizes: they stack more tightly than cut pieces.
  • Combine products: handrails and profiles can use the remaining space.

How are import duties calculated?

Duties depend on the product’s tariff code and where it was made. The rate is not the same for every FRP product.

Important: tariff rules change often. Confirm the code and rate with a licensed customs broker before you place the order.

What lead time should you plan for?

Plan for production time plus sea transit plus clearance. Production time depends on the product.

  • Stock sizes and colors: shortest production time.
  • Special color, resin or cut-to-size: longer, because of scheduling and cutting.
  • New mold or custom profile: longest, because tooling comes first. See custom pultrusion.

How can importers lower landed cost?

Lower cost per square meter by improving loading and avoiding over-specification.

  • Size the grating correctly. A taller panel than you need costs more to buy and ship. Use our RFQ checklist.
  • Order full containers where possible.
  • Standardize on a few panel sizes for your stock.
  • Compare lifetime cost, not just purchase price.

FAQ

Is FOB or CIF better for importers?

FOB gives you control over freight and insurance. CIF is simpler but hides the freight cost inside the price.

Why do two suppliers quote very different prices?

They usually quote different specs: height, resin, glass content or grit. Check the specs match before comparing. Our QC checklist shows what to verify.

Can a supplier tell me the duty rate?

They can suggest an HS code, but the importer is responsible for classification. Always confirm with your customs broker.
